DavidReedPossible Winchester news
Wouldn't it be nice if
THIS came to fruition. I'd be thrilled if we could buy M70's that were built to the same quality standards as the average S&W revolver.

JLarssonLong as it doesn't double the price.

McCrayTrying to build a cheap gun is what has gotten them in this position.
What I found interesting was the ..."Herstal has an interest in retaining the license from Olin, but Olin has said they would deal only with a bonafide manufacturer, which Smith & Wesson clearly is."
Makes it sound like Olin may not be real keen on renueing the license with Herstal.
Also, I read that Mayor DeStefano is running for governor and is trying to get some mileage out of this. If he can keep the plant from shutting down it would be a feather in his hat. He has had a record of being kinda anti-gun in the past.

I don't want to spoil anything for you,
but wasn't it Smith and Wesson who sold us down the river before?
Do you suppose they will only make the model 70 sniper/police special and sell just to government agencies?
I'd rather see Kimber take over. Then they could make both large and small versions!

Based on my experience with the last two 657s, a 657 pc, and a 629, I fail to see how M70 quality would go up if S&W took over...

Easy, they can commission Miroku to build it for them.

DavidReed9.3x62,
My experience is the opposite. The last new Smiths I've shuttled through my collection, M25 and M629 Mountain guns and a 329PD were pretty darn nice. I wish I had the 329 back! Though production quality is a spectrum and few do slip through the cracks. Our six collective guns do not represent a large enough sample to represent the whole. However, for the day S&W does turn out arms that are well fitted, detailed, and finished compared to the rest of the large volume manufactures.
Whomever ends up with the right to manufacture Winchester would do good to get the production out of New Haven. If DeStefano is concerned with the history and legacy of Winchester he ought to arrange for the City or State buy the factory and sell tickets for historical tours...
