We Acquired 3 "Snipers" Rifles

Gentlemen,

We got three of what is called snipers rifles.

A Winchester Classic Sharpshooter in 300 Winchester Magnum. We are in the process of developing loads for this rifle, and we will p[ost the results when we finish.

This is a Colt M16A1, which has PROPERTY OF THE U.S. GOVERNMENT stamped on it.

An AK47 variant.

The last two will be used for fun shooting.

Sorry to tell ya Saeed, but the last one is a lowly SKS with a nicer stock on it. Hardly a sniper rifle!!!! They are fun to shoot though.

Very interesting. Here is a picture of my "sniper" rifle, and two two hundred yard groups from same. The lower three shot group and upper 5 shot group after moving secondary adjustment on scope .5 marks. Ammunition is 175 Federal Gold Match.

Saeed, although the SKS originated in the Soviet Union, it IS NOT AN AK 47 VARIANT! It preceded the AK by at least 4 years, and was designed by Simonov, who had designed a Soviet semiauto between WWI and WWII that used the 6.5X50 Arisaka cartridge!!

DMCI - what kinda rifle is that. What will it do with handloads, because those groups aren't very impressive for the type of rifle it looks to be.

Jack....5 shots into what looks like less than an inch at 200 yards looks pretty good to me...I suspect it was shot prone off a sand bag rather than off a bench.

Nice looking rifle. Looks like the Marine Corps McMillian A-3 stock. A good sniper rifle with the right ammo, in the right hands WILL take the thumb wheel off a Bic lighter at 300 yards.

Groups shot off sand bag at 200 with factory ammo. Running about .4 moa. Stock is McMillan A4, you are correct big limitation is shooter. I do have handloads that I will take to range today. Unertl style scope is calibrated for Vm=2630fps 175SMK, so I have to Chronograph rounds for BDC.

Please feel free to post anything you feel might be of interest to the rest of us.

Threads on this board seem to develop a life of thier own - which is great, just like the free flow of information between a bunch of friends having a drink together.

I sometimes just scratch my head when I see Moderators on other boards moving one subject or another to another forum, or locking it because someone said something they did not like, or worse still just deleting it.

That M16 definitely has an M16A2 upper on it. Does the lower have 3 shot burst or is it semi/full only? I`m guessing if it`s marked M16A1 it would still be semi/full only. The main determining factor between A1/A2 is the 3 shot burst.

I have seen several of the "sniper rifles" with bipods. I have just fitted my Savage 110FP with a Versapod bipod. Is there a special techniques for shooting with a bipod? Mine does not seem very stable. Does one pull back on the rifle so that the bipod has no forward/back movement? Any tips appreciated.

You watch out for that SKS. According to the local paper, it is a HIGH-POWERED Sniper rifle capable of taking out men & machines at distances greater than *any* hunter has business shooting! It's so powerful, it's only use is war! [Eek!]

Although hardly considered a "sniper" rifle by most, the SKS is generally a somewhat more accurate rifle than most AK-47 variants. It was favored for sniping uses by the Vietcong/N. Vietnamese for sniper-type uses, while the AK was favored for hell-bent fusilades.

AK-type rifles are frequently seen in the hands of Iraqis (both military and civilian) in the current military foray, but I haven't seen any SKS pictured. How about it, any of you seen any SKS's in the reports from Iraq?

BTW, it is interesting that Iraq, despite an otherwise highly regimented and repressive regime, has apparently rather generous practices in regard to private gun ownership, with a great many guns in the hands of ordinary citizens. It's pretty common to see farmers wagging AK's to their fields (just like Model 700's in the gun racks of pickup trucks here). Guess the current "unanticipated" difficulties encountered by the coalition tend to validate what gun advocates have said for centuries about the deterrant to invasion of an armed citizenry (kinda like the Swiss have always known).

Most of those guns suck guys. Face it, just because they are black and 'cool' looking you think they will actually work...Sorry, but they are crap.
