gunsmith comments on Zastava
What do you have to say about the current Zastava actions or rifles (formerly Interarms Mark X) as the base for a custom rifle?

Please and thank you...jim

Their OK but nothing to get exited about. A bit rough on the inside. I would much rather find a Sears M50 (made with a FN action) & use that as the basis for a custom rifle.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

I had a Mauser artist, Peter Mouka, work on a M-48 from Mitchell's. He said he will never work on one again. He's waiting for me to give him my VZ-24. He says they are the best.

Apparently Remington thinks something of them...they're being introduced as the new Remington Model 798. Unfortunately they're probably not thinking about quality, only profit. As such, I doubt they'll be selling actions either, only complete rifles.

Charles Daly will no longer be importing Zastava products (per email from Charles Daly/KBI).

The worst thing about them is the kiss of death stamped on them....."Charles Daly"....absolutely nothing here that means quality.

I have a mag action that I'm building a .375 H&H and I have one in .25-06....so far the .25-06 seems to be OK...I'm still working on the Mag action.....I'm not afraid of it.....but wish it was an Interarms.

The comment about finding a JC Higgins is dead ON...It's good advice.

Properly handled the Zastava imports could have been a great bit of business....Daly's Kiss of death strikes again.....Cheap and no service.....

Good point.

I think, errr..., hope Remington sorts out any QC and CC issues these rifles have had when they start to import them. Once they get established over here, I may even buy one...

Doug & guys,

I have an intermediate length commercial Mauser action made by Heym for Monkey Wards, and I am looking for a standard length action for a second rifle project. Either an FN or the FN/Sears actions would be fine.

I am looking at a special edition Zastava/Charles Daly that looks good in the photos, but I haven't had a chance to see it in person.
