ForrestBCommercial Mauser Value?
Im looking at an Oberndorf commercial Mauser action in very good condition (round top, large ring, standard length). The serial number is shown in Speeds book as having been a Model B built in 28 29, originally chambered in 8X60. It looks just like the action (serial number 101356) pictured on page 163. The action in question comes with the original lever-release bottom metal.
Any ideas on a fair value for the action?
Thanks

lb404Are you interested in selling your action? I am looking for a commercial action to make a 9.3x62 on.

ForrestBHere's the deal, the action belongs to a friend. He thinks it's worth $1000. I think it's worth about $600 (at least to me).
I'd like to use it on a 270 I'm building, but the front ring is stippled and I don't want to put a front base over the stippling. At the same time, I don't want to use a claw mount with the front foot out on the barrel. I really don't want grind off the stippling. This action belongs on an open-sighted rifle or on a rifle with claw mounts.
LB404, maybe it belongs on your 9.3X62. But it will be a matter of price. I do think it's worth $200-300 more than a military action. The bottom metal must be worth $200 to someone.
ForrestA, I'd like to find a really clean '35 Brazilian or Chilean Obendorf, but I'd prefer not to tear up a good rifle just to get the action. I should rephrase that to, I don't want to pay for a good rifle just to get a clean action. If I get it cheap enough, I'll take it apart with a pipe wrench and a hammer.
LB404, let me know what you might want to pay and I'll make an offer.
ForrestA, I'll send you a PM. It's about time we got together anyway.

CustomstoxForrestB,
You are a lot closer to the value. $1,000 is really high. My estimate would be in the 500 to 600 range and that is tops.

I agree. An undrilled Oberndorf (or FN) should be kept that way and used for an open sight rifle, like a classic European sporter or express rifle. I also know where there is an Oberndorf ribbed octagon/round barrel (8x57J) that can be had cheap, would go good on that action.

lb404I would be willing to buy it for $500.00 right now. And it would be for my 9.3 project. Do you know if the action would need much work to accept the 9.3x62 cartridge?

lb404I am interested in the Orberndorf Mauser action you were referring to. Can you put me in touch with its owner?

Customstoxfla3006,
Is that barrel in reasonable shape? Does it have a full length rib? I am interested if Forrest isn't.
