D HumbargerYes LW uses a proprietary SS that they formulated. It is a bit tougher to machine but Tap Magic takes care of that in short order.

Actually there are at least four specialty steel mills in Japan that're making the purest grades of some steels ever seen, but we don't need it for barrels.
The Lothar-Walthar SS is extremely tough to machine and needs special lubes and processes to cut cleanly.....so-far I only have less than 2K rounds through one in a caliber that should take 8K befor wear starts to be a problem, so the jury is still out on whether the tougher steel makes a difference.
There is a fine line between "tougher and last longer" and "too tough to make a good barrel from". Lothar-Walthar has pushed that envelope and make great barrels from tougher SS than other makers use.
