I got an unfinished pepper laminated thumbhole stock for my 788, is true oil good to use on laminated wood?

Yep, although I prefer tung oil finish.

The Formby's Tung Oil Finish is like tru-oil but IMO better/cheaper....thinned 60/40 with Naptha is pretty darn good finish.

Whatever you use DO NOT use a varathane finish on pepper laminate. You will get a bright green camo stock!!!!

On laminates I have used Danish Watco Oil with excellent results.

Gym floor finishes work excellent also .They are modified with tung as well as olyresins ( penetrate into the wood makes them harder is and acts like oil .

Why would using a plastic coating Varathane ( Urethane ) finish turn it green ?.

Not that I would want to use it any way , but it shouldn't effect the color of the final finish !.

As usual my 0.0025 worth of input . ... salute

I cant say exactly "WHY" it happens - but I promise you that if you use a varathane finish on pepper laminate you get a dark green and yellow green striped stock. I tried it on 2 stocks with the exact same results. What I ended up doing was taking it to a auto body shop and having them shoot it with clear coat. It took a few trips with me wet sanding after a couple coats and then having it sprayed again. After the final coat cured I wet buffed it with 0000 steel wool for a satin finish. I have heard that the water base varathanes will keep it black and grey but have not tried it myself yet.

I've also seen the "varathane green" laminate stock. Have no clue why it happens. Maybe a chemical reaction between the wood bonding agent and the compounds in the varathane?

I haven't use Varathane on the pepper laminate but I have used a mixture of marine spar varnish, Deft Marine Teakoil(contains Urethane) and paint thinner. The stock turned green!!!!

It must some how be the stain used on the stock

!. I have news for any of you willing to stop and consider for a moment . If it's the adhesive holding the laminated stock together . THROW the STOCKS AWAY !!!!. What type of cheap adhesive would bleed with an over coating ??. NONE that I would ever use nor want on anything I own .

Urethane is a plastic type coating which is real tough if it's the correct type .

Bleeding is stain or some type of oil finish applied to the blank prior to refinishing by yourselves !.

I've never had any problems with urethanes bleeding colors what so ever . Water or Solvent type . I've used stuff which is not available to the public only to NASA or Military applications.

They are NASTY Tough and Deadly if proper precautions are not strictly adhered to .

The above is not to imply I haven't used EVERY commercial formula available also . I have and do .
