Quarter rib pics please!
Guys,

I've been thinking about what to add to my budget .458 AR rifle build. By budget I mean the number of dollars I have in it rather than the number of hours expended. Being retired the hours are less important than the dollars.

I thought I might try the approach to making a quarter rib given in a previous thread as I have a manual mill.

At any rate, I'd be very appreciating of any pictures of quarter ribs that you might be able to post or send me.

Thank you very much!

Are you aware that you can buy a very nice Dakota quarter rib from Brownells for about $75.00? That's what I installed on the .22 Hornet double that I built a few years ago. It's not a huge job for someone with average skills to adapt a rib built for a single barrel to fit a double.

Ron,

I am ... but have more time than money ... and a supply of steel and aluminum for fixtures, and a can of West Epoxy and steel powder with which to make the form.

Besides ... hang on for the heresy ... I may make it with a weaver rail to allow the mounting of a Holoscope.

If you are really interested, I'd say purchase a copy of Mark Stratton's book. He has a whole chapter on making them in the book, as well as good photos of a number of them.

Here's one on a 600NE Farq made by Clayton Nelson that I photographed at the Vegas show:

My gunsmith made this for me, don't ask me how they do it:

These pics are not very good but are of an Integral rib on a 375H&H. The barrel was done by David Miller and the cuts for the Ruger rings added later. Reason for rings is the action is a Westley Richards with a nice engraved bolt handle I didn't want to alter for scope.

What barrel contour will you be using? I will see if I have any photos filed away for the proper contour.

We're still considering that. We have a light African Parker-Hale .458 to work from, but Rick_R thinks it is too light a barrel for a heavy. He's rechambered his to .458 Lott and says it is a beast (and he is pretty immune to recoil).

I have a Win SS Classic M70 in .375 with a relatively heavy bbl and like the way it handles. We'll compare the two and see if we can come up with a contour for a 22" bbl that gives us the right weight (over 10 pounds) and feels good.

We'll let you know.

Mike,

Have a look at the Martini & Hagn website under the Custom Barrels & Scope Mounting section.

I think these are some of the nicest quarter ribs I have seen.
