Cut & Weld Enfield?
Is it possible to cut and weld 2 P14/P17 enfields to make a long and short pair. The short would be short and the long would be really long. If so, how long could one be made, theoretically?

Well, DOC, How the hell long do you want to make the magazine, and perhaps what for? The magazine box can be extended to a mag box length of 4" to the rear and never include shortening up the front at bullet ramp. This would include whacking off about 1/8" from a trigger unit, Making a complete new bolt stop and redesigning the ejector in a shorter configuration. Beyond 4" you start getting into bolt wobble when the bolt starts forward to battery. Trying to weld up two receivers where the various mill cuts do not match up can be very trying and will require an exhaustive vocabulary of profanity, notwithstanding decided technical proficiency. The best subjects would be 2 Remingtons. Winch. used at least 3 different types of nickel steel and serial numbers will not tell you scratch. Eddystones and Remingtons stuck rather closely to a reciepe similar to AISI 2340 but the Eddys have problems with lengthwise cracks in the thread area which when not visible at start are certain to show up somewhere near completion of a project. As to your question- been there, done that, got the tee shirt. Disaster lurks. Don't!
