Here's the before and after polishing photos of a rifle chamber that had gotten some rust in the chamber from a downpour. It didn't take more than 30 seconds using polishing paste and 0000 steel wool on a nylon bore brush at low RPM's to get to this point. Would you stop here and say "good enough" or continue until all is flat? Very little material was removed. It's my first attempt at this and I don't want to go too far. I'd leave it as is for now and shoot it. If it marks the cases or gives difficult extraction, you may want to go farther. But my bet would be that it will work just fine as it is now.

If it functions fine I'd leave it alone.

You are done; you don't want a too smooth chamber, like an engine block cylinder, some texture is a good thing.
Anyway, looks like all your rust is in the chamber where, or very near, the solid cartridge head is.

Thanks all. dpcd That is all just what I was thinking as the only bad pitting is at the rim/head area. So, I confined the polishing there.
The main chamber walls only have minor blotches. But, before I assume anything, I better fire a couple rounds to check case grip there.

If you rechambered that to 7mm Rem Mag all of the pitting would go away.

So, would half the value of the rifle.

And your shoulder, a 5 pound 7 mag would be hurty.

I have one of these in 30-06. It isn't fun to shoot.

I use pieces of those green Scotchbrite pads. They don't remove metal.

Might have worked. Andre at Blaser USA recommended this process.

Have you tried to "tone down" the '06 with slower powder and lighter bullets? Just curious.
