Savage 99 and 264 win mag?
Just wondering if this would work? With either the rotary mag or with a drop-out mag version 99.

My goal in this little endevour is to load a 99 with some caliber other than 308/300 that would give me adequate power @ 300 yds to take an elk (as long as I do my part, that is).

Any other cartridges you'd think would work here?

I wouldn't. They don't handle escaping gas, or, flying pieces of bolt nearly as well as those having a "solid top" design. If you just have to have a lever action, Browning offers several that would be just the ticket for what you need.

The Savage 99 magazine length restricts it to short action rounds. The 284 winchester will work as will the 7mm08. Both were offered in the 99 at one time. The 358 winchester would be my choice for your application.

The 338 Federal is as much muscle as you're going to get from the grand old Savage 99!

Vapodog is right, and that 338 Federal is a real go-getter. You have also 2 problems in using a lever action. First lever action, cannot withstand the pressures of a magnum shell, and a 264 is a mag shell and your bolt face is different as well. vangunsmith
