stock repair ?
broke the pistol grip off a 270 wby deluxe. very clean break. i set the piece back on,and it lines up evenly, except for a small chip near the trigger guard. the question is repair it or scrap it? if the consensus is to repair, what's the best way to do this ?

That's the most common problem with Weatherby rifles. They bought Claro walnut totally wrong in lay-out and unsuited for rifle stock use.

You can repair it by drilling a quarter inch hole from the rear tang screw hole on the top of the inletting, back and down all the way to the grip cap....you'll need to buy or make an extra long bit to do it.

Then epoxy a piece of threaded steel rod in the hole. Use GOOD epoxy (Accraglass or thin 24 hour Devcon clear are both good) and coat the break its self too.

Use a bar through the magazine box opening and then wrap surgical tubing around the bar and back over the butt pad several times to hold it all together. You'll need at least three hands. [Smile]

You might have to glue the stock together before drilling for the reinforcement rod. Be SURE to glue together tightly by using the tubing or loops of inner tube for clamping.

Afro, is this break below the bottom line of the stock and somewhat parallel to it? If so it is easier than what Jack is talking about. If not go back to plan B. If it is below, just glue it back with Epoxy. Use surgical tubing to hold it in place and use epoxy like Jack mentioned. A friend did the same thing on an Outers Varmint rest. the front yoke was against the pistol grip and he fired it off and it sheared off the gip and 3/8" of wood.
