Shortening Ruger plastic stock
Short version: Can someone tell me how to shorten a new Ruger composite stock without screwing up the butt pad attachement and sling attachement, about 3/8"? Thanks very much.

Long Version: I bought a new Ruger M77 stainless/composite (plastic) in 300WM a year ago. It's been great so far as far as accuracy and mechanically. However, I'm not a tall guy, 5'10" and the stock seems a bit long. I match it up next to my Rem 700 that fits perfectly and it looks like its about 3/8" longer.

I've already taken the butt plate off in order to add some weight to the back to improve balance. I notice the molded holes for the butt plate screws and the insert for the sling attachement screw. I'm concerned about shortening the stock and messing with the molded screw holes.

Thanks very much

I haven't done this on a newer M77 but If you cut it off and there's not enough of the molded screw bosses left (and there probably won't be), you shoudl be able to from the butt end, cut them out and epoxy in a peice of wood to put the screws into.

I did the same with my SS/synth Ruger M77.
Did cut off abouth 15 mm and there is still plenty hold for the butt pad screws.
At least...nothing has come loose so far, and this rifle is my "rough and tumble" gun in 35 Whelen.
