The rim dia. for the swede is .480 and just about everything I've been looking at for a rebarrel doner has a .473 rim dia.

If I was to re-barrel an old beater Remington, or Savage (say a .270 or 30/06 as there seems to be an abundance of these around fairly cheap)

Is the gunsmith going to have a difficulte time with the rim dia. difference?

You will have to forgive my ignorance, but I haven't even really considered building a rifle before.

given the way the Remington bolt works the former swede flavor should not affect any rechambering to .473 diameter cases.

I will wager that most of the time, the extra .007" will make no difference and the rifle will work just fine. I did this conversion to a Mauser and had no bolt face problems, but neither I have read where anyone else doing this conversion had a problem with the rim diameter. And if you do have a rim diameter problem, any good gunsmithing with a lathe could fix it easily.

I am also told that most US manufacture brass has the .473" rim. I have not measured mine to see, but my Winchester brass has given me no ill-results.

Chances are you will be just fine.

And I think you will enjoy this new cartridge. I think everyone should have one!

All of the US made 6.5x55 brass that I have used does in fact have a .473" rim diameter.

I had thre same concern and learnedthat not only do the American rifles have the 473, but so is the loaded ammo in the uUS. Additionally, I recently used some Lapua ammo in a Winchester an there was not problem. Seems to be fine.

I have a Husky that was originally a 8x57 with the small size rim then later rebarreled to 6.5x55. I'm currently shooting Euro ammo (Sellior & Bellot) which is the larger rim diameter and everything is working flawless.
