AllenBosely1909 Argentine vs Persian 98/29
On the AR board here, the 1909 Argentine is talked about as a bases for a custom rifle way more than the Persian 98/29.
Other than the bottom metal on the 1909 is there any advantage to a 1909 over the Persian?
The Persian seems to be very well machined can be had unissued or at least not re-arsenaled.
Is the 1909 machined to closer tolerances or something?
Would it have less play in the bolt when fully back or something else?
I'm not criticizing the 1909. I need to get 2 actions for custom rifles and the cost is very close. I don't need the bottom metal from the 1909.
I'm just looking for some input as to which to get.
Is there an advantage of one over the other?
The cartrages will be a .375H&H and either a 7x57 or a 9.3x62.
The actions will be heat treated either way.

The Only advantage is the bottom metal. Also the 98/29's I have seen were way too nice to cut up.

CustomstoxAllen if you don't need the bottom metal and it will be surplus to your project, you can sell it for about $150 and the cost between the two is that much different. Both receivers would make good cust rifles. Good luck.

Marc_Stokeldone thing to consider is the writing on the Persians is in Farsi or something. This may or may not bother you. Personally, I prefer words in my own alphabet on the actions, even if they are in a different language (I kinda prefer the wording in a different languae). It may or may no bother you, and if you are going with a lot of engraving, then it would be filed off anyway.

AllenBoselyMarc, they will be surface ground.
If there is no real advantage to the 1909 I'll go with the Persian and get later metal.
Sarco has barreled actions for about $180.

Marc_Stokeldsurface grinding on a large ring will not touch the left side wall. You will still be able to see the lettering (it looks kinda like Arabic lettering and words) on the action when the rifle is finished. As stated earlier, this may be a total nonissue for you, but just wanted to be sure you knew and were not surprised later.
Are the Persians you are referring to 98/29s? If so, then $180 is a good price for those rifles. Sounds like a great buy if they are 98/29's and it should make a nice rifle for you.

Ole Miss GuyTry Samco in Florida. I got two barrelled actions from them on separate occasions and they were in unissued condition, absolutely mint. Sarco, you never really know what you will get. The scope mounts hide enough of the Farsi not to be bothered.

thismortalcoilI had Hart do a 30-06 on one of the Persians when they first came out many years ago, made a hell of a rifle, nice and smooth. The farsi didn't bother me. Use it and don't worry.
