Pre 64 and Classic actions
It has probably been discussed before but what are the differences between a Pre 64 Model 70 and the more recent production now called Classic CRF actions? Sometimes I see references to pre 64 actions when it appears that a more recent Classic action is being talked about.
Well, I am by no means aware of all the differences but I will try to give it a go.
Classic
The extractor is not made of spring steel (my guess is that its cast) easily replaced by aftermarket product.
The extractor collar have an anti binding feature- not sure if it helps in any way.
There is also a groove cut in the lower edge of the right locking lug, and a ridge machined on the upper edge of the right receiver wall
The bottom metal is on recent production guns, one piece (only 2 action screws)
No open sights
No forend screw ( and no swell or band near the breech of the barrel)
The receiver is polished.
The classic is not set up for a receiver sight.
Rolled on checkering on the bolt handle.
No hole in the bolt´s grasping ball.
Stock comb is higher , recoilpad is rubber, QD sling swivels.
I am sure the are other differencies (a pre64 action and barrel is not a drop in fit for a classic stock)
All the best

One of the main things is length. The classics come in long (up to 375 H&H length) short (308 length) and now "super" short. Pre 64's only came in one length whether it were a 22 hornet or a .458WM. Another thing is the bolt shroud has more of a flange to help vent gas away from the shooters face if you have a case rupture or blow a primmer.
