Austin HunterRust Blue Question
What's the best way to card the rust from inside of the receiver? By hand with steel wool? Are there any internal surfaces of the main receiver you wouldn't rust blue?

montea6bI've only done a few, but I didn't put any rusting compound on the inside of the receiver. Surfaces that don't get rusting compound will stain a little anyway, I just scrubbed everything good with steel wool and oiled when I was done.

BobsterAgreed. Only outer surfaces should be rust blued.

DEGREASED steel wool. Do not use it as it comes; it is coated with oil. Wash it in acetone first.
Yes, I only put the acid on where I want bluing to go; everything else, like the bore, does not rust (like you think it would). Once you steam it, like Bobster taught me, the result is a very fine black soot that wipes off easily.

gnoahhhI buy 0000 Liberon oil-free steel wool for carding. Works a treat, and no need to de-grease it. Google it. Lots of distributors.

Great tip on the oil free stuff. Even if I have to use acetone to make sure, it has to be better quality than the stuff from Homey Depot.

BobsterThanks for that info!
