Rear sight base removal
I have a Mosin-Nagant rifle that I am trying to change a little and would like to remove the rear sight base. I have the sight and spring removed and have drifted out the two pins that should hold the base to the barrel. Is the base soldered too? (it doesn't look like it). If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. I have hammars from real small up to about 9 lbs but am reluctant to hit it too hard unless that is the proper procedure. Thanks!
You're on the right track, the sight needs to get drifted forward is the only thing.
Start with the 1.5lb hammer and a brass drift. If that doesn't work just keep increasing the hammer size until you find one that works!
The Russian M91's were soldered, but I don't think they have the 2 pins in them.
Thanks Mark, I heated the siight base and used a big hammar and a brass drift. When the solder flowed I whacked it and it come right off. Thanks for the help.
