When I got started doing it someone suggested I purchase Pilkington's Classic Oil finish from Brownell's. I did, and it comes with a little booklet that has very detailed instructions, easily worth the rather high price of the product. It is a good product but you can use the procedure detailed in the booklet with any oil/polyurethane blend finish.

Another possibility that I've tried and liked is

http://www.gunstockblanks.com/oldafrican/index.html

Available from Brownells, it comes with a complete kit including filler, oil, wax, and polish. Instructions included.

All really good processes. But how about refinishing an old stock (checkered) by a guy with diminishing skills? No hurry though. KISS method preferred.
