Incredible detailing on that rifle in both views.
But it needs to be shot a little or a lot.

it's a mid-caliber Rigby- throw some numbers at me and I'll remember which one, exactly.

the pictures came from an auction site (a real one, professional auctioneers), the Rigby was one of 1000's of firearms offered, and that was just one auction.

don't recall the URL, I found them wandering around following links after a search.

That Rigby is beautiful, but howe (pun intended) about this one. It's a link to an auction but it shows a rare and fine Howe-Whelen bolt peep.

two questions on that one-

1) how(e) is the shroud kept from moving

2)is that little piece with "ready" stamped on it the safety

You got me on the questions, I hope someone else can give an answer. It looks very bulky to me.

true- but on the other hand, it doesn't add any weight to the firing pin.

interesting.

The 2007 Gun Digest has a short article on the Howe-Whelen sight. Mr. Petrov would be the local expert around here. Many custom builders of the day would add material to the bottom of the bolt shroud to prevent it from turning. Being that this was a VERY expensive sight, even in it's day, I suspect that they were made for the individual rifle and fitted up with only as much clearance on the bottom as needed to allow for proper function.

I asked the guy selling it on ebaaaay for some pictures. He asked for my email and sent about 6 different views of it. Great reference!!! Wish I could justify buying it.

A couple of bolt-sleeve sights, the Howe-Whelen sights were made by Hoffman Arms Co.
No. 1 is for a 1903
No. 2 is for a Mauser
No. 3 is an unfinished one
No. 4 is the tool room model from the Niedner Rifle Corp.

If you have questions about any of these sights I’ll try to answer them.

And one by Surkamer.

What was I saying about two weeks ago about this very consept! I do think that the design can be much simplified for hunting use from the versions shown by Michael.

That is where a peep belongs. not hanging off the cocking piece!
