You cannot either manganese or zinc phosphate "parkerize" stainless steel.

If I remember correctly there was a discussion on stainless steel guns earlier this year where someone mentioned that you can parkerize SS but it just changes it to a grey rather than silver color and doesn't parkerize it in the normal sense.

You can apply an iron oxide coating to a stainless barrel to take bluing, so, continuing along this line of thinking, I would imagine that any finish which can be applied to an iron based material would work. It might not yield the desired results as it would to a straight chrome moly barrel, but I'm pretty sure, someone, somewhere has done it. Or not.

I see a lot of members using other methods to coat SS like teflon or products like Gun Kote. I love the way parkerized guns look so if I were to do it, I'd probably go with Gun Kote due to it's appearance and durability.

I've got a Ruger SP101 stainless steel revolver...had it bead blasted and parked for a toned down finish. Not quite the same as the way carbon steel turns out...but close.

That's a nice rifle there Montana...I think your pics are reversed though...the bolt handle is on the wrong side!

Here's the parts list:
-Rem 700 BDL LH action
-Douglas #7 1-10 twist SS .308 barrel (chambered 30-06)
-McMillan A2 stock, desert camo molded in
-Badger Ordnance floorplate, recoil lug, 20moa base, rings, bolt knob
-scope pictured is Leupold 6.5-20x50 LR M1, USMC mildot reticle(from Premier Reticles)

After accumulating all the components, I had the rifle assembled by Iron Brigade Armory. The action is full length bedded in devcon titanium bedding compound. The metal was treated with the gray parkerizing. I could not tell you much technical info about the actual process. I am very pleased with it though. As you can see, the stainless steel does not take the parkerizing as dark as the receiver, but it looks very nice.
The rifle is a shooter. It cuts sub .5 moa regularly with 190gr Matchkings, and shoots under .25 moa on calm days, when I do my part.

I love those 190 Matchkings.... That Long tapered boattail flies wonderfully at 1,000 yards. The 180 MKs used to have the same long BT design but Sierra switched the BT on those bullets back in the early 90s to the same profile as the 168s. And ever since then I have not been able to get the 180s to shoot worth a darn past 600 yards. But the 180s are still a very good 600 yard bullet and will save you a few inches over the 168s if the wind kicks up.
Will be trying the 175s pretty soon. But I've still got several thou. 168s and 190s left to use up before I try something new.
