ClemsonVet Bring-Back => Project Rifle
I found this one the other day at a pawn shop. The vet actually did a nice job on the stock. This is probably the nicest military stock conversion that I have seen lately.
Note the inlays to cover the holes in the stock. I can remember when Brownells sold those diamonds and shields. Heck, they may still sell them.
The other side looks about the same:
The action looked nice and trim:
This is where it began to get interesting to me:
Yep, it's a G33/40.
It is really a shame that it was converted, alas, the original stock was buggered and the barrel had a new sight plus some machine work on it. It is sort of interesting that the Vet used a ramp front sight but kept the original rear sight. Apparently German mountain troops were not expected to shoot past 1000 meters.
Another downside is that the bolt is not original. In fact, it is a Late-war bolt body with round gas relief holes.
Machine work on the bolt is sub-par:
I have an Argentine bolt to replace the bolt body with. Now I have to decide what to do with the thing. I have a Shilen #2 barrel (.284) that I was thinking of using on a 1909 Argie, but it is a lightweight barrel, and this is a lightweight action. I also have a 7x57 reamer, but I am not opposed to 6.5x55 or .257 Roberts. Any ideas?

z1rI think either the 6.5x55 or 7x57 with a contour lighter than your #2 would make a sweet rifle.
Nice find by the way.

Duane WiebeI don't know what you paid, but the G33-40 actions are bringing big bucks

ClemsonI did not know what the actions were worth, but I knew that I had never held one in my hands! I paid $180 for the rifle, and I felt like I was doing OK, even though the bolt required replacement. With the new bolt, tax and all, I have a little less than $225 in the action.
I pulled the barrel last night. The action is very well-made and in excellent shape.

z1rThe action is worth about 3x what you paid. Now you know why I said, nice find.
You need to build something really nice on it.

flacoYou've always been lucky with actions, Clemson.
I remember when you glommed onto a bunch of '09s.
Now you find a G33/40 for less than the price of a good Vz24?
Well done.

Marc_StokeldWay to go! THat is an excellent deal you got there

Sounds like you did what I do-when folks ask me how I find so many actions, I say it is simple: ALWAYS keep your eyes open.

Or a credit card!
Two years ago I was cruising the gun racks at the local Cabelas when I saw what I thought was Mauser bottom metal.
This was the result. Everything matches.
I paid $285.00

ClemsonI would have had to jump on that one, too, 22WRF!
One thing that I notice about the G33/40 is that I like the trigger guard pretty much as-is. I may contour the bow just a little bit, but generally the shape suits me just fine. For the purpose that I will put the rifle to, I don't think I need hinged bottom metal either.

In case you change your mind, 1909 ARgentine bottom metal fits perfectly.
