Mauser Action
I have an 8x57 rifle and was hoping someone could be able to help identify it. I don't have pictures at the present but may by Monday. On the top front of the action it has S/47 (or 42) and 1938, and on the left side it has Model 98. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

WV,

Sounds like you have a standard pre-war mauser.
The year of manufacture is obviously, 1938
The manufacturer code S/42 is the Mauser works, Oberndorf.

It should read "Mod 98" on the left side, not "Model"

It also should have a serial number on the side of the receiver ring which may or may not match that of the barrel, bolt, stock etc.

Depending on where you got it, it could have a number of Nazi proof marks all over.

Please post some pics if you don't mind

Will try to do so Monday. Is that a good year? Any inherent problems with them?

1938 is a good year and up to 1943.

They make great sporters.

Would Winchester bottom metal fit this mauser? That is with relatively to no additional work?

No. Not even close.

WVB,

It this a complete rifle or just the action?

If a complete rifle there may be considerable collector value,

If just the action you have one of the best for a project rifle.

As to bottom metal, you can get an original military for $10 bucks, a commercial Mark X for $75, a takeoff from an Argentine 1909 for $100 or the really nice stuff from Sunny Hill or Blackburn for $3-400.

Dan

Please show some pics,

A russian rework without Nazi markings is worth up to $200.

A vet trophy may be close to $500.

You can get a "project" mauser for $75 - $150.

Dan
