hm1996FR 8 Spanish Mauser
Reading thread about lug setback on 98 Mausers brings up the question: Is the FR 8 Spanish Mauser considered safe to shoot with 7.62 Nato ammo and/or factory loads? Thanks.

Daniel MDon't confuse the M 95 FR7 in .308 CETME to the FR8 M98 in 7.62 x 51 , the M98/FR8 it's OK the M95/FR7 only to reload to 7 x 57 pressure level .

ClementI have one of these, and shoot it with mil surp 7.62*51. I have found that it was created on a m98 mauser action and is plenty strong for modern loads. As was mentioned the FR7 is a different story.

ClarkI know a gunsmith who took in a a Spanish Mauser that had gained so much headspace from shooting 308 ammo that he could not sell it as it was.

larrysI wished I had kept all my documentation on the FR8. Bottom line is that is is perfectly capable of handling standard 308 pressures. This is according to the Spanish government and arsenal. I have two, one is sporterized and the other is now a custom 6.5-284 and they function fine. I always make sure all the numbers match (which they almost always do) and have them checked by a good smith just as you would any used military rifle.
I had to give up my FR8. It was a handy, dandy little rifle. derF
