Recoil RobParker Hale Safari 30.06?
The one I'm interested in is a 30.06 D&T'd for scope mount but has iron sights, it has a thumb cut but no charger hump and the serial # is 85XX.
I looked up this gun in our archives and found all but one thread were for .375 H&H's and other big bores with a few 243's thrown in. I also see that the early ones were milsurps while the later ones were Santa Barbara actions. I read in one pot that the SB action do not have the thumb cut, can I be reasonably sure this is a milsurp action since it has the cut but no charger hump?
My step-dad has an '06 in a Safari Deluxe and it sounds like what you've described. Thumb cut, no charger lump. I've been trying to steal that rifle from him for years. But a dear friend who is now deceased gave it to him as a gift, so he won't part with it. Alwasy liked that rifle a lot.

There is a lot of mis-information about P-H actions. My theory is that Messr's Parker and Hale knew far more about gunsmithing than most of the people who write that misinformation , and if P-H chambered it in that calibre , or used that action , then it is perfectly fine to use that rifle - unless its a neglected , abused dog , obviously.
You will want to throw away the original scope bases - they are the same dovetail as BRNO rifles use so brings are costly and not a great choice available. The D&T spacings are the same as Redfield/Leupold 2-piece base spacing so use them and have access to a multitude of rings.
P-H rifles are sturdy , well made products of the British Firearms Industry of the 50's-70's, functional without being flashy , useable without being demanding.
You will enjoy that rifle , for sure.
Here is a link to a site that will tell you all you ever wanted to know about the P-H rifles
