Barrel Band Swivel - Ruger Alaskan
Just picked up a Ruger 375 Alaskan. This particular gun is sans the barrel band swivel attachment and I'm looking for options. When I say looking for options, I mean options that do not necessitate the removal of the front barrel band sight (not a fun project, at all). Likewise, I'd like to avoid options that involve metal discoloration. I know - asking a lot.

Given the above, it seems the only option is a clamp-on barrel band swivel. I've seen both 2 piece and wrap-around versions, but have drawn a blank finding anything that will fit the .745-.760" OD of the barrel.

Ideas?

I had one of the first of these to come out, and back then, they had the swivel in the stock. Later changed to a barrel band. I just lived with it.
However, best thing is to remove the front sight band, install a sling band, and put the front sight back on. They are easy to remove, but might need rebluing (peening is the best way to remove them; do not smack them more than once; some will come off that way, but most won't.) Loosen the set screw first.
I never liked the clamp on ones anyway.

You can cut the stand barrel band the width of the front sight band, slide it over and back to the position you want like two inches in front of the forend...Use Epoxy, or a set screw or whatever..Id still prefer to use a tig weld and reblue..

Some Englich guns just use a large holed peep screwed into the underside of the barrel, and that looks really cool IMO..especially with the hook type catch on your sling.

Ray,

Your idea had crossed my mind. Never seen it done that way. Your bringing it makes me want to look into it a bit further.

Ray, Are you saying you would tig the band to the barrel?? Get a band of your choice and diameter, cut the top half off- or more, file to shape, slide to position, clamp and solder. Yes you will have to touch up the blue but it will look much better that that POS clamp on unit.

Best not to weld it on. Solder. I don't like the clamp on ones either.

I know a couple of smiths that can tig anything, probably hat pins together..In the method Im talking about Id use something like 44-40 solder but then Im not a metal smith short of drill and tap..Most of my bolt handles are tigged, a few have been silver soldered..ever since one came off soldered I guess with mild solder or improperly..
