Don't know if it is true or not, but some older benchrest shooters claimed they were "stiffer" than the current short action 700's?? Never checked the actual measurements, wall thickness, etc. on one, but could be one of those urban legends we sometimes hear about.

Well, I like the bolt stop spring design a lot better...but that bolt handle is FUGLY.

The bolt handle is too short (and ugly), they fare much better with a 700 bolt handle and the triggers aren't as good as the 700. The floorplate and trigger guard are steel but stamped out of sheetmetal, The best thing you can do with them is replace the bolt handle, use a Timney trigger and Williams Firearms bottom metal. Then you've got a real nice action.

I like 721 and 722s for custom builds. they seem to be tighter and smoother than newer 700s. With replacing the appropriate parts I think they mike a little bit better gun.

I have seven Rem 722's and never look twice at the bolt handle..

They have a weak extractor that is subject to breakage. They might be considered "better" than the current crop of R700s to the extent that they were built by hand machining as opposed to being sawed out by a computer. Remington represented the 700 as an improvement. It is more of an "update".
