StikRSuitable cartridges for Rem 600 mohawk
I recently aquired an older Rem 600 Mohawk rifle. I am considering a project for that action. I kinda like the dogleg bolt, just diff I guess. I have heard these are good, light actions. This rifle is presently a .222 Rem. What cartridges are suitable for this action? I am thinking about a .22-250, 7mm-08, 6mm rem, .257 Rob

Rem. 222Leave it a .222 the triple duece is hard to beat for accuracy. I have the same rifle except for #8 contour SS barrel and a McMillan HTG marbled camo stock.
Rem. 222

remboJust my opinion, but I'd never open the bolt face on a .378" bolt 600.There are probably 1/10 as many of these as there are .473" bolt 600's.Go with something on the 222 or 223 case. These cartridges will be plenty, especially of you go one of the shorter barrels that are generally used on these actions,ie: 18-1/2" to 22"How about a 222 Mag or a 6x47?

<Lightnin>Stikr,
Ever thought about a .17? I just got a PacNor blank and chambered it for 17/222. What a neat little cartridge. Jim

John GYou heard right. The 600/660 actions are prized by many as the base for custom guns. They have a reputation for being very accurate. There was a recall for the trigger, though, and that you should have replaced or fixed for free by a gunsmith that does Remington warranty work. Look on the left side of the trigger itself, right at the point where it protrudes from the trigger guard. If the trigger has a "v" printed on the side, it's been replaced. If not, get it done. Better yet, get an aftermarket trigger put on it.
As for calibre, any short action round will fit well, but the .257 and its parent, the 7x57, are really a bit long to use in a 600. The bullets have to be seated too deep to get good performance. Stick with the .222 platform or go to cartridges based on the .308. They all fit well in the action and being inherently accurate, make a good match for such an accurate action.

dan belisleGet another bolt with 308 sized bolt face if you want to put everything back to stock sometime in the future. These make great lightweight rifles, I have five of them in various calibers. the point about the X 57 cases is valid, but you can modify the magazine and opening to allow three inch COL fairly easily, which will accomodate these cartridges. Think a nice light weight 250-3000 Ackley Improved, maybe with a Mannlicher style stock. Great rifles. - Dan

kevralDan:
Would you know if it is possible to open up the magazine of a short action Rem 700, too? Would it be to the same length as the 600, in that case?
Thanks!

dan belislei think I just answered this on another post, but yes, you can extend a 700 as well. You'll probably get a little more out of a 700 then a 600, too. - Dan

SheisterI have a Rem. 700 .17 Rem take off barrel that would be just dandy on that rifle. Even have dies, and about 200 loaded rounds of ammo to break it in with!
