<squirrel skinner>removing a mauser 98 barrel.
I have a mauser 98 that I'm going to sporterize. and I need to remove the barrel to replace it withe a new 308, but I don't want to damage the old 8mm military barrel.
what's the best way to remove the old one?

AtkinsonS. Skinner,
If you have to ask how to take a barrel off without damageing it, then you are probably already over your head...Get some help on that job and read up on gunsmithing 101....No since ruining a rifle and placing yourself in danger.

I wish you Bubba's would stop chopping up the Mausers.
Why worry about damaging the barrel? You're already intent upon destroying the rifle?

ready_on_the_rightThe cost of the action wrench, barrel vice, and proper blocks and probably two bushings would be better spent letting someone who can fit and headspace your .308 barrel properly!
I know this because I have the vice, action wrench, steel block, and bushing for large ring Mausers in a tool box in the other room that after having unscrewed the barrel off my VZ-24 have set there untouched!
I will eventually get another one and "learn" to do some of the work myself, but don't have the "throwaway" money to take those lessons in trial and error yet.

i Built my own action wrench and barrel vice out of 1/4" steel and a welder.Cost about 30.00 for material + Barrel Bushings.

<squirrel skinner>Why you guys jumping on my back? you have to start some where, and besides I never have done a barrel job, this hobby(so far) is just for my self, and besides I'v done I don't know how many trigger jobs, restored 3 old millitary rifles to look like new. And have fixed guns for my friends for quit a while. This mauser barrel is a tough one to get off. I've taken other barrels off before.

AtkinsonI wasn't jumping on your back, actually I was trying to save you some grief and a ruined action, sorry if it bothered you..Have at it pard, it's your gun.
I got the impression, from your post that if you had to ask, then you were very new to gunsmithing...very confused !!!

MauserkidI usually get the action with a cast iron pipe that is clogged up from years of &%*& sitting in there. SO,,, My initial removal tool is a PIPE WRENCH>>> OOUCH>...
I use the wood blocks to reinstall the new Mil surp barrels. The wood is like my torque wrench, I can't over tighten it.. It has been working ok for now. I know I will need to upgrade soon..
Later...
