GerryTed,
I'm sure there's folks out there who will be happy to contradict me; but IMO (& experience) checkering a laminate stock is ONLY for those who REALLY know what they are doing and what the end result should be. While it can certainly be done, normal thin (layers) laminate stock checkering is not only difficult to execute but dosen't hold up as well as when done on harder woods due to thin wood layers and expoxies to checker through. This is the underlying reason why the vast majority of laminate stocks are not checkered.
Just for some Out-of-the-Box considerations and options there are many ways to enhance pistol grip and forearm grip on laminates that provide a good grip and pleasing esthetics, stipelling (sp?) inserts, glued (epoxied) materials such as sand, grit, only limited by someone's imagination.
Cheers,

Bill SovernsI would be happy to checker your stock. Turn around time is 2-3 weeks. What type of pattern are you looking for?

Bill SovernsGerry,
Checkering laminates is a bit more difficult but problems can be avoided if you dont checker the stock at to fine LPI. About 22 is what I like to do. A few diamonds will probably fall off but thats just the way it goes.

Uncle EnfieldI'd highly recommend you use one of the women in the business. There are several that can do it depending on your budget and they won't F up your stock.

What are you talking about. Gender has nothing to do with the quality of checkering. I've seen Bill's work and think he should raise his prices. He doesn't wear a skirt either.

Gringo CazadorBill Soverns is as good as anybody in the business, has the best turnaround time. Doesnt wear a dress so you don't have to screw with PMS.

MKane160Bill. He did a pair of my stocks, had to repair a knot hole in one of them....and he only charged me 10 bucks for both of them. I really liked how they both turned out.
Well, I might have lied about the 10 bucks....but, for $300, he checkered both in the Kimber 8400 pattern (4-point, no wrap around), repaired one of the stocks, and checkered a saddle pattern on one of them. I thought that was very reasonable...

Uncle EnfieldGuys, Bill and some of you appear to have read too much into my statement. I never implied that Bill F'ed up a stock of mine or anyone I know. I simply said the women, most of whom have done a few for me, won't F your's up. I know their work. I don't know his. Simple as that.
Better?

OldcoyoteSherry Abraham did my Ruger brown laminate stock at 20 LPI. It was a good job but checkering on a laminate does not stand out as much as on regular walnut. Still, I like it very much.
I also added a Ruger steel grip cap, an ebony forend tip, and a softer recoil pad.
