I am seeking a rifle action for the 327 Mag., 357 Max., and 10mm. Any great ideas out there on what will work. Thanks.

A bolt action? Maybe Cooper has something that will handle such short cartridges.

The CZ is a thought. I have one in .223. I also have XP100 and a Sako 461 actions. I was thinking a Sako action for the PPC would work as a single shot. Cooper won't sell actions. Their man told me he didn't know of any of theirs that would work with a rim. I told him I believe they offered a 25-20 and a 218Bee at one time but he was unfamiliar.

Ruger single shots work real well with those. At least the first two.

Boxer large primer brass for 7.62x39 is nearly the worst case available for pressure. Only the 10mm handgun large primer case is worse.

The 357 max brass can take more pressure than any rimless case.

The CZ527 is not a very good gun. I like 98 Mausers and Ruger #1s, but the CZ527 is not even very good when compared to lesser guns, like the Rem700, Win70, Howa1500, and Sav110.

Measuring a piece of RP 357Max brass, the rim is .343" in diameter and the rim is .054" thick.

Measuring a piece of RP 7.62x39mm brass, the rime is .342" in diameter and the rim is .053" thick.


What does it all mean?
1) The CZ527 7.62x39 bolt face and extractor will fit a 357Max case.
2) The CZ527 is not a great rifle.

I think I would probably choose a Martini Cadet action for any of those mentioned, with a Bob Snapp-type extractor for the rimless case chambers. I would likely do a bit more investigation before I used really hot loaded large diameter cases, regardless how short. The barrel tenon diameter is not gigantic on Cadets.

I have had Ruger No.1s barreled to 30M1 Carbine, .45 ACP, and .444 Marlin. I could just punch out my CHP .357 for that matter. That action works fine but is overly large and a bit harder to use a bore guide with. In any case I was wanting a bolt this time.

One of the old Savage bolt actions (or any other bolt action for that matter) for the 25/30/32 Remington cartridge will fit the 10mm case head without any changes; though I don't know about feeding with such a short cartridge.

Tanker, if you are going with a #1, consider the 40S&W. It can make more velocity than the weak 10mm case in a strong action good case support.

The brass is cheaper, too.

The SAAMI reamer for 10mm and 40 S&W is .4274 +".
You don't want that.

The Lee Carbide die is .416"
The brass springs back to ~ .418" when it comes out of the die.
The base of the brass is .422"

Cut the chamber with a .418" straight fluted reamer.

Polish .002" off the wall of the orifice of the breech until a cut down case will chamber.

Finish cutting the chamber until the longest 40sw case in your collection will chamber ~ .837", not the .850" SAAMI dimensions.

Throat with a 40 S&W throater until a 1.169" 200 gr XTP will chamber.

Cut some 10mm brass down to 40 SW length.
Do a work up with both until the primer pocket gets loose [resize loaded ammo to fit in chamber].
Notice how the 10mm length will never make up for it's weakness?

Interesting thoughts on the 40S&W. I had not considered the case construction aspect. I do think however that I will be going ahead with the 10mm. I have plenty of brass. Although I also have a load of 40s. Even though I have a No.1A in 7x57 I can rebarrel, I think I will stick with the bolt idea. I may try my Sako 461 for the 10mm and my XP100 for the 357 Max. unless something better pops up. Still vacilating. Keep the ideas coming. Thanks.

I do not intend to load above standard pressures as I have handguns in the same calibers.
