Help indentify Shilen barrel
I received my Shilen barrel blank in 6mm Friday and now my gunsmith don’t think it is Stainless Steel. The barrel is almost black in color. The marking stamped on the end barrel says
SHILEN
243 S
sm 6 8
I ordered a Stainless Select Match blank 6mm 1:8 twist. What are these markings?
THANKS

The 243 is the caliber the S stands for stainless, the 6 is the contour, the 8 is the twist and the SM stands for Select Match. Don't let the dark appearance bother you. With a little polish is will brighten up.

Try to put some cold blue on it to a part you shined up a bit. If it is CM the blue will color it, don't think the stainless will color.

The stainless used for guns is magnetic. Cold blue is the test.

I don't think Shilen even offers Select Match barrels in CM, but I could be wrong. Not that there's much difference between Match and Select Match with Shilens...

416 stainless steel is magnetic. It will also rust.
