JohnHuntwood on new M70
I have a new m70 featherweight and want to make the stock a bit more red colored. It is plain brown now. Can this be done? How?
Thanks,
John

Toomany ToolsSure. Chemically strip existing finish being careful to not mess up the checkering; sand and stain then refinish.

ForrestBJust beware that the best candidates for the reddening treatment are very dark stocks. Light colored blanks don't turn out nearly as nice.

JohnHuntAny suggestions for the stripping chemical? How about a good stain and oil for say a nice Purdey style finish.

Thomas JonesAny professional here who wants to tell me how rong I am please feel free as I truly don't claim to know what I am doing.
I had a while back, 2 pre64 featherweight stocks and only 1 such rifle.
Both stocks had pads added and lots of finish missing.
So I decided to experimant. I chemicly stripped as much as i could, sanded down to a rediculesly fine grit saving the checkering ,
I then used a cap from some chemical and started mixing 4 drops of red food coloring with some gun oil, Hand rubbed it in , let dry and then did the same again many times with different kinds of oil. Smothing with fine steel wool between coats.
I have a very prety pre 64 model 70 .308.
It must be noted that I have not used the rifle in bad weather and I don't know how weather resistant this finish will be.
I will try to post a picture.

Thomas JonesMight do the same with the 88 on the bottom,
But it does not have a pad added so even thought the sock is missing lots of finish, its still origional.
But a matched pair would be cool !
Both are .308s.
