Local gunsmith (Dennis Olson) will install a Sako style hook extractor in my Remington 700 bolt.
Anyone else have this done to their rifle? If so, pros? cons? And do you know if this conversion
could be done to my brothers left handed rifle?

I have this mod on a 700 in 340 Wby. It works well. Theoretically there might be a loss of strength due to opening the "rings of steel" but within normal operating parameters I can't see it. And it certainly gives you more ejector than Remington does. FWIW - Dan

I have this modification on a custom 700 in 300wsm. Most all gunsmiths do this whin opening up the bolt face. It is pretty tried and true. And yes it can be done to a lefty.

Why do you want this procedure done. Have you actually had extraction problems,with this rifle.

To properly fit the Sako extractor to the Remington the counterbore should be bushed prior. The eception would be when opening up the bolt to a larger diameter. The undercut can otherwise cause a problem. If the bolt face is to remain the same and the present extractor is of the "rivetted in" design then I would be inclined to stay with the 700 extractor. If the extractor is of the "snap in" type or if I were opening up the bolt, I would install a Sako type.
I kind of like Troy! Why does it suck? I know much of Montana (like my home state, Idaho)is being hurt by the influx of people from that southwest coastal state but apart from that there seem to be worse places! Regards, Bill.
