How hard would it be to convert an existing skip-line checkering pattern on a stock to a regular, non skip-line pattern? Would it make more sense to sand it down and start from scratch?

Do not sand it down! First question is why change it? Did you screw it up? I have found that if a piece of wood chips out, I can mix some bedding compound, stained the right color, and smear a gob on the bad spot. Let it harden and checker it. You will not see it.

I would like to change it because I don't really care for the appearance of a skip line checkering pattern. I have an old Remington stock that I'm trying to rejuvenate. It is a fairly nice piece of wood, but has the skip-line checkering, white line spacers, etc.

I'm going to replace the white line grip cap and recoil pad, and would like to change the skip-line checkering pattern to a pattern that is more pleasing to my eye. Then refinish the stock. Trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. That's the goal, anyways.

If the pattern is normal spacing it whould be easy to finish the pattern. It is cut checkering and not the old pressed checkering.
