sight band diameter/solder question
Hello - what is the general guideline on the proper difference in diameter between the barrel and a band (sight or sling swivel) that is being soldered onto it, for a proper "slip" solder fit? I was told .001 - I was also told that it varied with the diameter - that it would be different on a 6mm barrel versus a .458.

Any rules of thumb?

Thanks

Ok...if the muzzle diameter is .600 what diameter barrel band front sight should I order? Conversely, if I have a sight that's .600 inside the band, what diameter should I specify at the muzzle when ordering the barrel. I don't have a lathe so it matters.

Good question-looking forward to a response.

Just a nice snug slip fit would seem right to me.

That fit works very well for soldering pipe together.

I do not worry about the exact diameter; if it slips on it is ok. If you have to drive it on, it is too tight. If it falls on and wiggles, well, you will have a lot of room to fill up with solder; not ideal but it will still work. Use tin and silver solder. LIke Brownells force 44.

Thanks, but you usually have to specify these things. Is .001 difference enough? Or do you typically need more than that for a slip fit for soldering? And I may be using slip fit incorrectly ...

Solder with the proper flux will flow between a .0005" gap or smaller. When heated correctly the solder will want to get in the gap.

And even if you have to drive it on a bit there will still be a gap of .0005 under some of the sight. Right?

Duane Wiebe says that the banded front sights need to be reamed with a tapper or the ramp will not sit flush on the barrel.

Kerry, where in the world have you been!? I was just thinking that I needed to organize a search party. Glad to see you back here on AR!

Remember, the barrel is tapered, the ramp is not. The two need to be fitted to match. I taper bore mine.

Thanks very much. That's kind of what I needed to know.

Slips on means slips on by hand without wiggling. I turn my barrels straight for sight ramps that aren't tapered; easier than tapering the inside of the ramp. Sometimes I taper the inside; depends. .0005 to .001 is fine for a clearance. Anything where you don't have to drive it on is fine.

OK thanks - so .001 is fine then. I know that the Recknagel sights are set up to match with Lothar Walther's barrels and there's usually .001 between the barrels and the band diameters.

Doesn't have to be exact; it's not a rod bearing on a rocket motor.
