Case in point from a forum member.
Ray Atkinson
Call to me for question & answer quiz.
3 bolts arrive
(I'm suppose to mind read particulars for said bolts/handles from weeks prior)
1 Bruno 21 w/stick welded kitchen hardware handle.
2 Mauser
Awaiting sample bolt/handle from ID. to copy.
Turn handles/Bend/Fixture/TIG Weld/blend/polish to 400grit.

Return said bolts w/ cost quote by USPS Priority Mail/Ins.

Phone rings a week later stating handles are not even close to sample.

The 2 turned/bent/welded/blended handles were INDICATED to .010"maximum variation on all aspects to sample bolt/handle.

Send them back.
I cut handles & ground handle bosses as short as possible & returned.

I wouldn't piss on the man if he spontaneously combusted to this day.

Part of the problem, yes only part of the problem

is you are in the remote bolt welding biz where communication is incomplete, muddled or lost via the phone or email.
Much of that could be resolved if you had a decent website with pictures and descriptions of what information you require to complete the job.

But you don't, so sally forth through the frustrations.

But that brings up why on a GUNSMITHING forum the vast majority of the topics are not gunsmithing, but whom can I send my gun or part to have gunsmithing done on it. lol

Kinda like being on an auto repair forum and asking who can change my oil for me or a cooking forum and asking where should I dine out.

I must apologize Dan. I checked my records and it was an Interarms Mark X that I desired the bolt handle welded on. I regret the error.

Again, my main wish is that you get some evaluation and treatment for your personality disorder.

For what it's worth, my experience with Dans40XC has been hit or miss. Adjusting primary extraction on Rem bolts no problems. Sent 3 Mauser style bolts for handles along with detailed pics from his website attached to each bolt after a preliminary email agreeing to be billed when job is done to cover all his expenses. Received everything back not done along with a condescending letter about not providing enough information, handles wanted not available (HIS pictures??), etc, etc. I find the work flawless, the customer service and attitude not so much.

Douw: Yes, there are members of his forum that actually are Gunsmiths. Some are full time professionals and some are wannabe hacks...and others fall in between.

This scenario is found from lawyers to plumbers.

The very least you should demand of anyone who "fixes" your gun is to demand to see an FFL.

Yes I read it.

My point is that this is a gunsmithing forum and rather than pros and non pros posting their work, their setups, their questions about to perform some task, some product they found, etc.... the bulk of the topics are,
Who can do gunsmithing for me.

And yes I realize that not everybody has the equipment or skills to perform every aspect of gunsmithing, but still most topics are,

I have a lot of diverse interests. Currently I am refurbishing a lathe and wanted to get some info on paints, body fillers, prep etc... So I looked on auto body forums and got that info. And in many hours of doing so I didn't see 1 post asking,
Who can paint my car, fender, fix a dent for me. lol

So I question why that is the case here?

People come thinking they can tackle a project only to find out how involved it is. Their next question is, who can do it for me.

Most gunsmiths probably hate posting here because some one will invariably chime in and point out how that person is doing it all wrong. Besides, many are simply too busy to post how-tos on a regular basis. And when they do, all to often they are rewarded with a deluge of posts stating how to do it "the right way."

Yes, that is a problem that needs to be addressed.

I am all for calling out armchair gunsmiths, who by the oddest of coincidences never post their own work.
And did so up this very thread.

If someone is going to say that isn't the way it should be done, let them show us the way it should be done.... or bugger off.
