It's as you guessed, a DWM large ring 98 Mauser action. Santa Fa sporterized military action, mainly the 98 Mauser and the SMLE .

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Bingo! Mine has the "B" as part of the serial number too. "B" = Brazilian?

catboat I must plead ignorance on what the B in a circle means. Hopfully some other collector will give us some insight.

I'm certainly not a Mauser expert, but I did own a 1908 Brazillian with the crest intact.

DWM mark

Bottom metal

The bottom metal is mismatched to a Brazillian. My point is that without the crest, I am not sure there's any real way to identify it. The 1909 Argie, 1908 Brazillian, and any others made by DWM in this time frame are reportedly interchangable...just with a different crest.

Enjoy it for what it is. Without a lot of detailed research and a few good books (interesting in it's own right I'll admit) you're not likely to come any closer to a positive ID.

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.
