This is my 358Norma barreled action. The barrel lenght in front of the action is 20.25" It was in a mannlicher stock that had some water damage on my move.

I was thinking of sticking it in a normal stock. This is a little Mrtyle wood second I just picked up for $150. The barrel will extend in front of the stock by 12". With a swivel mounted on the barrel what do you think?

As usual just my $.02

I think the 358 Norma is great, and I would like to have one.

What's a "normal" stock? Wink

Are you thinking to not use the stock shown?

Like I said it was a mannlicher. At 20.25" I always thought it a touch long for a mannlicher. I had stuck it in a couple other 98 stocks I had laying around and their forarms were longer and I didn't look right. This little stock has a shorter forarm and I thought it looks pretty good with that length barrel.

Hi,

My feelings are the forend is just too long for such a short barrel. Once you install the barrel mounted sling attachment things will look out of proportion. Easy enough to move the forend back and shorten the ebony tip. Do a drawing at full scale and decide from there.

Good project and good luck.

I think since the metal isnt pictured at half depth it is a little deceiving; although IMO it is a little long. 7"-7.5" is as long as I would go on that one, although people dont pay me to make these decisions yet... A barrel band sling swivel could make things interesting.

It also really depends on what the rest of the stock looks like. Proportions, proportions, proportions...

I agree. I think barrel mounted sling swivels look just a bit odd if they are forward of the midpoint of the barrel, and if you placed it at the midpoint it would be VERY close to the tip. I would shorten the forend a bit or attach the sling swivel to the stock. Just my humble opinion...

Nice looking wood though, I look forward to seeing photos of it finished.

Also, is the butt end cut to the final configuration/LOP you want? The pitch looks a bit "off" to me.

Thanks for the link. As it sits now because of the dowel in the tip 8" is the shortest it could go that would leave a tip of 1.125" long. I hear what you are saying about the swivel. However a light rifle in 358Norma I didn't want the swivel in my front hand either.

I think what I will do is fit the action to the stock with the tip as short as possible. Then if it needs to come back a touch I'll cut it off and stick a new tip on it.

Hot Core
Hey RamRod, Just tuned up my "Critique Eyeball" and it is indeed interesting.

1. Somebody has stuck something BLACK on the front of the Stock that needs to be knocked off with a hammer. Or, it might be a piece of an old smelly sock.

2. Somebody has taken a Bull Whip and Lashed it across the grain. Or, maybe Bleach was dripped across it.

3. Somebody sat a Hot Iron on the Butt portion and singed it a bit darker. Or, maybe they rescued it from a fire.

4. Someone has taken a Chain Saw to the rear and nearly lopped off a hunk. or, perhaps the tree had a wire fence running through it and they yanked the wire out.

5. The "finish" is a bit dull. Or, perhaps it is one I finished and got tired of messing with it.

6. The rear Sight appears to be Rusted as well as a bit of the Receiver farther back. That is " OK " though since that is very normal for Blue Steel.

7. It appears someone has stowed a Day-Glo Orange Vest(shirt, gloves, hat, something) down inside the stock at the rear. I like that feature.

8. Unless you have a very VERY small Trigger Yanker on your hand, the Trigger appears to be a bit short. Or, maybe it is made that way so it doesn't hang-up on much since there is not a Trigger Guard.

9. There appears to be a total lack of a Floor Plate. That should help hold the weight down and help with rapid cleaning.

10. No Rear Sling Swivel. No need for a Barrel Band Swivel if it doesn't have a Rear Sling Swivel. Or, perhaps that is for some kind of new Sling(called a piece of rope).

11. 358Norma and a 20.2500000" barrel. My "guess" is you should be able to HEAR it right well when you shoot it.
-------

Actually, as long as it "Balances Well" when Loaded the rest of it should be fine - if you like it that way. tu2
