22WRFCustom stocking the model 70
As a matter of course, do most restockers cut off the rear portion of the Model 70 before restocking.
In looking at the thing that rear extension requires one to have a certain downward angle on the stock, which in my mind is too steep and thereby causes one to have to short of a grip.
Question. How much do you need to cut off of that rear extension in order to get the stock to a more suitable line on the top of the grip?

jimmyd223God damn WRF, WTF are you talking about. Are you trying to ask about reshaping the tang to get a longer grip?
I've read and re-read that post till i'm dizzy but then again, I'm low on caffine.

Bill SovernsI havent cut off a tang yet. Here is a job without the tang being modified. I filed it a little.....but not much.

DavidReedAre you asking about milling down the tang to an angle that lends to a more gracefull grip shape or contour? I don't know of anyone who does that as the M70 doesn't have that steep of a rear tang. Not nearly so like a Rem. 700 or Wby. MKV. There are some smiths that will alter the shape to that of a pre-war M70 but that is more fancy metal work and purely aesthetic.

Damn man, I hope your pacemaker didn't kick in.

I would have commented but you and I both know what would have been the outcome.

22WRFI could comment but I know what the result would be.

What I am saying is that becasue the model 70 is cast, you can't bend that rear tang upward so that the top of the grip can be straightened out out a little bit, which then means you can straighten out the bottom of the grip a little bit. So I guess the next best thing to do is somehow cut it off to get rid of that steep angle. Or, to put it another way, where do you cut it off so as to be able to make a stock that looks more like one of Customstox beautiful creations, but on the Model 70 action.
Frustration comes from not seeing somebody flip you off.
