Dual Dove Tails for an FN Mauser!

D HumbargerDual Dove Tails for an FN Mauser!
Just thought some of you might be interested in how to make a set of dual dove tail bases for an FN Mauser. I've always wanted a set for the Mauser ever since they came out but no one made them. I discovered while digging through my stach of bases that the front base from a set of Redfield bases for a Ruger Deer Stalker fit the contour of the rear bridge of the FN Mauser. The hole spacing was even a match but the base was .018 ( eighteen thousanths ) too high, hardly a problem. I machined .018 off the bottom of the base to match the redfield front base height & WALA! a set of dual dove tail bases for an FN! Thats a9.3x62 in the works by the way.

Old Elk HunterNice clean solution. What is the source of your 3 postion safety/shroud?

Nice rifle. Unless you are set on maintaining the original receiver tang shape, you can streamline the grip by filing the top surfaces down till they end up flush with the sear slot. That will also get rid of that notch in the stock behind the tang. Just a suggestion.

If I could ask a silly question, what are the two holes on the side of the receiver for?

Old Elk HunterPeep sight, a.k.a. receiver sight. If you will look at most M94 Winchesters, M70 Winchesters, and most Remington bolt actions you will also find a pair of screw holes on the left side of the receiver that serve the same purpose.
On the pictured rifle the stock was not cut away to allow clearance for the installation of a peep sight. On a lot of rifles, the stock has to be cut substantially to use a peep sight and can leave a rather ugly looking notch. It is common practice to NOT cut the notch. This could have added to your confusion over the use of these two screw holes.
When you are asking a question to honestly learn something then it never is a stupid question.

D HumbargerThis is a work in progress. The safety is a Dakota & stock is still well above the wood line
as you can see. I also milled a gas vent on the left rear of the bolt raceway. fla3006 hold on to your chair! I bought 2 of these FN Supreme actions still in the white with consecutive serial numbers for $65.00 EACH at a gun show in Alexandria La. a while back! Stay on your side of the Sabine!

Here's a Lyman 48 sight block mounted on the side of an FN receiver via the two holes. I like using old Lymans & Redfields on Mausers.

D Humbarger, I envy you. Just please put those actions to good use!

fla3006,
Thanks for posting the cool photo. That's a neat receiver. I trust the rest of the rifle looks as good?

fla3006Tex, yes it's a very nice rifle if I do say so, 270Win, factory engraved, not drilled for scope bases, European sporter stock with Continental cheekpiece, lots of drop, schnabble forend, etc. I'm finishing up the checkering. Come to one of our "bubba big bore gatherings" near Huntsville and you can shoot it!

An old gunsmith in that area died & his son-in-law was selling a bunch of his stuff at the gun show. I paid what he asked & didn't try to bargain one bit!

Nice job and great buy. I ran into a similar situation here and got a Mannlicher barreled action with redfield mounts for $50 and a G&H ring/base/mount for $25. No bargining om my part either. QUESTION: I believe I read somewhere on this board that there were some of those FN actions in the white that hadn't been heat treated. Are you going to check yours or have it done? A search might turn up the thread. Would hate to see anything go wrong with the project

AtkinsonHumbarger,
I am building a 416, 404 and a 10.75x68 on three FN actions that I picked up recently...then are mostly finished metal wise, some work I did and some sent out and I am on the stocks now..I will make those...
Did you just polish those actions by hand or did you surfact grind them..
