I am fixin' up a rifle that has a problem. They had a slip on style but pad and for some reason scored the wood around the pad. The oil that they protected the gun with entered this area and now that I am fixin' it all up I am wondering it there is a way to get the oil out. Its not that big of problem but it would look better gone. I have heard about soaking a rag with denatured wood alcohol then putting it on the stock and letting that go into the wood. I am afraid of trying that. Any solutions?

carbon tetrachloride works if you can get it

take a "gun box" which is long enough to put the stock into, and line it with one long sheet of aluminum foil, so as to make a "water proof" bin.
Next fill it with acetone and set your stock into it, and put a rock or other weight on it to sink it down. Soak for about 8 hours and then turn it over. Soak for another 8 hours.

This will usually pull out all the soaked in oil.

Use diatamacious earth (sp?)with alcohol to make the paste. You can get some at a pool supply store, they will likely have a bag that is open. It is cheap. It will absorb the oil and draw it out of the wood. The paste will go from a white to a yellow, take it off and redo.
