Kroil?
Bought some Kroil the other day. Is it best used for rust protection/conservation inside or outside the bore? Or both?
Anything I should be carefull with?

AtkinsonKroil is best for loosening seized screws, lifting gunk out of the barrel etc...Use it with JB Compound to really clean a bore....Not as a preservative or protector....

Plateau HunterI have been using a mixture of Kroil/Shooter's Choice in a ratio of 1 part K/ 2 parts SC for 6-8 years and it seems to work well at keeping the bores clean with no excessive accumulation of fouling ect. I generally leave it in the bore as a final wipe and have not had any problems with rust either. There are different mixtures and recipes out there and I don't know what is the 'best'. Plateau Hunter

Kroil is GREAT [!] stuff that has many uses whenever a light penetrating oil is needed. It also has rust inhibiting and lubricating properties but I would not use it for that purpose alone because it is wiped off fairly easily and it migrates around allot to areas you may not want oiled. There are other products designed specifically for rust inhibiting and lubrication purposes that work better.
As a bore cleaning additive it works really well at getting in, under , and around crud to loosen it up.

The_ShrinkI have heard reports that it strips case hardening colors if used as a preservative, that is, put on and left over time. Never used it myself, so no personal experience.

Was at one of the Houston Gun Ranges yrs ago, was running a rod through the barrel and an older gentleman that worked there walked up and told me, run some kroil and JB past throught and find out how clean it really is. I did that, been using Kroil and JB past for about 15 yrs now.
Transmission fluid is good too.

Not sure if this is text book, but it works for me. I run a wet patch of Kroil or mixture of kroil and Sweets or whatever I have, follow with dry patch until its gets the powder/carbon etc out, may have to do it a few times. Then I use just a little bit of JB on patch over a brush. I think the back of the jar of JB paste reads about the same. You can tell when you get the copper out by the color of the patch. Then I use Kroil or transmission fluid or whatever I have to get the JB out. Pretty simple.
When I shoot those barrel fouling barnes bullets, I use barnes cr10 or whatever its called. The new foam cleaners, wipeout etc work good to.

LDHunterKroil is wonderful inside a rifle or pistol barrel but is is NOT a nitro solvent.
You should always use a nitro solvent to remove burnt powder residue when cleaning a barrel. Other stuff is often necessary (ammonia, bore paste, etc) but IMO the nitro solvent (eg Hoppe's #9) is the first thing I use every time I clean a barrel.
Also... Using Kroil with JB Bore Paste is good. What you do is thin the JB Paste with the kroil. IOW.. You mix in a "bit" of Kroil with the JB... Note!! Be sure to get ALL the JB out of the bore before firing. It is abrasive but not a lapping compound.
