tnekkccHow do you keep the barrel vise from scratching the bluing?
If a guy wanted to switch barrels in a Win70, how can he not scratch the bluing and the metal?
TIA

gunmakerGet a little bag of powdered rosin from the local bowling alley and wrap the barrel with a powdered piece of one of those tear out reply cards from a magazine. You can fold the card to double it. The rosin keeps it from slipping so much.

tnekkccThanks,
I can see on my computer that I got a 1 pound can of ROSIN back in Jan 2000 from Brownells. It must be around here someplace.
Anything else?

You can use powdered sugar, it grips like velcro, won't scratch the finest finish and washes off with hot tap water.

Alberta CanuckI use scraps of roofer's sheet lead. Wrap around barrel a couple of wraps, place wrapped barrel portion in the bushing, squeeze the bejazzus out of it in the barrel vice...that is, make sure the barrel vice is very tight...as tight as you can get it with a long wrench handle, BEFORE you try breaking the action loose.
So far has never failed me, knock on wood....

model70manI just bought a small block of rosin at the local guitar store for less than $2.00. Just scrape some off with a knife blade on to the wooden vise blocks. Thanks...Bill.

jørgenIt might be to eficiently and to cheap and to simple.
Just wrap 1 rev of writingpaper around the barrel before outting it in the barrel vise. My limited expierince shows it to be working in both metalvisebloks and wooden viseblocks.
For non typical barrelshapes i use 2 pcs of 4x4x2 of Bubibga wood, vith a standard u groove in, and a 40 ton hydraulic press.
Most barrels comes of in that fixture
