Seeking competent gunsmith in Montana/Idaho/Washington
I live in northwest Montana about 150 miles from Spokane, Washington, Kalispell, Montana, and Missoula, Montana. I'm looking for a controlled round feed 416 Remington Magnum with a two position fore/aft safety (like a Remington 700). Since this is not commercially available, one route is to take the Mauser action, as imported by Charles Daly and have a gunsmith install a 416 Remington barrel on it, send it to Mcmillan for a stock, Maybe to KDF for a brake, and if necessary, install an after market trigger.I'm new to this area and need recommendations for a gunsmith within the 150 rqdius that is up to the task. Suggesrions/recommendations for gunsmiths would be appreciated as well as any other approaches to achieving the sort of rifle described above.

You are close to one of the best builders of big bore rifles around. Make a trip to Plains, Montana and talk with Dennis Olson. He will be able to answer any questions you might have about your project.

Talk about a hotbed of gunsmiths. not sure about a 150 mile radius but you are right close to Dennis Olson, Thos. Burgess, Jerry Fisher, Lee Helgelander (spelling, crazy last name?), Jim Baiar. Idaho and Washington bring a whole nother slew of them into the mix.

Enjoy interviewing and talking to your pick and the project process.

Is Roger Green still operating in Glenrock Wyoming? And don't rule out Bud Morrow in Sheridan. Also Ross Billingsly of Ranchester Wyoming. Each are particularly good at what they do.

Just call Dennis Olson in Plains, I know of no better reasonable priced MT gunsmith. Do a search of this site for contact info and testimonials.

Just a suggestion--since you're up there, you might look into one of the Montana Rifle Companies barrelled actions in 416 Rem. Great action, good barrels, reasonable price, immediately available in Kalispell:
