M 98 action
It is said that one of the the most desirable actions for a custom rifle is a VZ-24, and no gunsmith uses the Kar 98K, What is the reason to prefer a VZ-24 to the german action?

Let's be clear about the actions we are discussing: The Kar came in at least three versions that I know of excluding the later Polish variants: The Kar98, Kar98a, and Kar98b. These were the small ring 98's that had large ring threads. They were Standard (full size) actions (exactly the same length as the vz24 and K98). These were used during WW1.

Now, the K98k was built during and leading up to WW2. It is a standard length action and essentially exactly the same as the vz24.

To answer your question, yes, the vz24 would be preferred to the Kar98. Why? Because it did have superior metalurgy and also did not posess the Kar98's annoying habit of trying to become a takedown rifle.

I consider the vz24 and K98k to be on par with each other and either in good shape would be a good action to build on.

Could you elaborate on this? I have noticed some of the Kar 98 receivers are about as thick as a razor blade over the extractor. I have also seen one of these receivers that was caved in on top by an action wrench.

That pretty much covers the bulk of the matter. I can elaborate further later but I'm off to catch a plane.
