Rem Finish Stripping...?
I have an old Rem 700 ADL with the super glossy finish. It has sufficient damage that I want to re-do it with a satin surface. Plus its a good time to add a recoil pad. What do I need to use to do this job? Thanks, Mike.

Mike-

I remember seeing stripper specifically for that somewhere. Brownell's maybe? Possibly someone can help out there.

However, I had to reblue an older M700 years ago, and chose a matte blue for it. Because of that, I had to do *something* with that stock. I took 0000 steel wool & gently rubbed it (in circles, not straight lines). After getting my "feel" down, I did the whole stock. Knocked that high gloss off & ended up with a very nice, soft looking, matte finish with very little hassle.

Maybe it's worth a try. I imagine that factory finish is a bear to strip...

Go to the hardware or paint store and get a product called Zip Strip...it will get rid of the 'bowling ball' finish.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I have been advised to let a good smith do the pad job, and probably will. I suppose I can try the refinishing in stages. Thanks again, Mike.

If your going refinish it you may as well install the pad as you can sand the wood with the pad all at the same time, just be sure and use a long sanding block and make sure the pad follows the stock lines.
