I am looking at a model 116 in 300winmag. It has a problem feeding on the 2nd round. Would I be correct in assuming that the lips on the magazine are bent or that the follower spring is weak? Is this something that can be fixed without buying a new mag well or spring?

I have had feed trouble with a lot of savage rifles that is whay I just use them for varmints. They are very accurate but I have had to much trouble to use them on big game.

Feeding problems usually take very close examination with a dental mirror and flashlight and a whole handfull of feeding dummies. To ask to analyze one by internet is a little too much.

Is the round flying up and missing the chamber. I had that problem for a short bit. I left the magazine fully loaded with the bolt closed overnight, then check it. You may have to leave it for the day too. You all can mail me $5 for my assistance. LOL I believe the spring must be to strong to start with.

When I put the 416 Taylor barrel on my Savage I also put in a magnum follower and spring. The rounds would jump right out of the mag as soon as I started forward with the bolt. I mean ALL 3 rounds and the faster I went the farther they flew. I took the follower and spring out and compared them to the standard follower and spring. There is a definite difference in spring shape, spring pressure and follower design. I ended up putting the magnum follower on the standard spring and haven't had a problem since. The Savage mags do have a bit of springyness. Since the change I have loaded 3 rounds and cycled the action as fast as I can at least a dozen times to test it out without any problems but I still won't use this one on anything that might not roll over and play dead without a whimper.

I had the same problem with a 700 in .264. I picked up the barreled action used and stocked it myself. When I got to the range it did the 3 round rapid unload others here spoke about (bet that's why I got it so cheep!). I compared the follower to one in a standard caliber from an other 700 and saw they were the same. On a chance, I ordered a new follower for a magnum 700. The new follower solved the problem.
