I have access to actual mammoth tusk....yes ivory...it was found in one of the local gravel pits where they pump the contents of a gravel pit with water up to about 60' deep.

Among the unusual finds in this pit is a piece of mammoth tusk about 18" long and 4" in diameter.

The owner has agreed to sell me a piece for pistol grips and fore end tips for a Mauser project. The problem is that neither of us have a clue what it's worth and don't want to "screw" each other....just make a fair deal.

Anyone ever buy such a treasure?...anyone ever work with something like this? Any advice?

Here is a link for some mammoth ivory on ebay. There are other mammoth ivory auctions on ebay at the moment too.

This might give you an idea of what the market is paying.

I have no clue as to value so I'm sorry, can't help you there. When I was a kid in Idaho, a friend gave my Dad a big chunk of mastodon ivory, though it could have been mammoth ivory. It had come out a glacier in Alaska. It had rested in some ground that had a high concentration of cobalt. The cobalt had leeched into and penetrated the layers of the tusk. When you polished out any of these areas there was a dramatic wash of dark cobalt blue across the white ivory. It was really stunning to see.

Brian

Thank you Wes.

This house building project is getting very old and I'm dead tired. I just decided to do some shooting and sighted in a 30-06 and a 6.5 X 55 the last few days.

I was mixing concrete and needed gravel for the mix and that's where I found this mammoth tusk.

Maybe this winter I'll get to fit some to my next project. I've never used anything but wood for tips and caps and this thing is stuck in my imagination quite strongly.

How's your 300 H&H doing?

Forrest,
Still in the gathering stage! I do have the barrel and have had it turned half octagon and half round. The action I got from you has been stripped to the reciever new bottom metal, trigger and safety. Now working on Quarter rib and sights. Here is the blank I plan to use.

Is the bottom metal still available or have you sold it? I might be interested to put it on a VZ-24

Long gone. It was sold to finance some of Jeffeoso's bottom metal and safeties. He stretched to mag box on the new one also.

Don't over do that house building thing. If you need any help I'll send Lois over.
