Remington SP-10 Loading

To load the gun the Owners manual lists the following steps. I will try to paraphrase:

1. lock bolt open
2. place in once shell through the ejection port
3. push carrier release to close bolt

Here is the problem:
4. "push in on carrier release button" and press another shell against the carrier until the carrier starts to move.
5. push shell into the magazine.

My question is, can I remove some metal, either from the carrier or the carrier release button, so that I can load a shell without pressing the carrier release button.

I know I will still have to press it to close the bolt, but I don't think I should have to push it for each shell.

First, don't alter anything. It's been a while since I've had an SP-10 in the shop, but if I recall correctly, it is an odd duck (pun intended). I'll do some checking for you, but in the mean time, try this:

On an empty gun, place the gun on safety and lock the bolt to the rear. Place a round directly into the chamber through the ejection port and then push the carrier/bolt release button to close the bolt. With the bolt closed, turn gun over and load the remaining rounds into the magazine as usual. Keep muzzle pointed in a safe direction and go hunting. I believe that is what you are supposed to do. Again, I wouldn't advise altering anything.

I have had a SP-10 for almost 20 years and don't even notice the added step of holding the bolt release button while reloading. It has become a habit and doesn't slow me down in the blind.

It was designed that way, right or wrongly, so don't mess with it. You might create a difficult problem.

Just my thoughts.

That's the problem, it's just not the usual way to do it. After the bolt is closed, you still have to press the carrier release button to load a shell into the magazine.

I have never seen another shotgun that has this feature and I don't fully understand how it makes the gun more safe. Only more cumbersome to load.
