Value of a Pre-War Model 70?
Guys -

Don't know where to post this, but since I read this forum most, thought I would put it here.

Have a nice 1939 Model 70 30-06 that is excess to my needs and don't know what to ask/what it's worth. Original stock and metal butt plate, checkering is worn down to nothing. Two extra holes in sidewall for Pachmeyer mount (have the mount), no front or rear sight, no additional holes in the top. Bluing is quite worn on the action and trigger guard, barrel has nice shiney bluing. Bolt matches the receiver. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Realistically, in today's market, in the condition described, I'd say $750 max. But then again, if you come across somebody who wants a pre-war M70 really bad, maybe more.

I bought one 2 years ago at about 85% for 800.00

Craigster is right if somebody wants one bad enough you could get 750.00 or more for it.

What I'm finding is local conditions seem to drive the price of these. Locally here in the Albuquerque area that rifle would trade for between $450 and $600.

There was one this weekend that sold for $600 in similar, well used but cared for (not abused) condition. It however was unaltered.

Wow, glad I asked as the market seems to have dropped since last I checked.

I'll be listing it in the classifieds for $700 shipped and look at offers.

Thanks for the help.

With respect.......limit to value imposed by (1) holes on receiver, and (2) surface wear. Receiver state is critical....can always find a barrel.....but a good/pristine action is the most valued component.

That is a fair price you're asking.

BTW if you do sell it and your buyer is gonna replace the wing safety for a 3 position, I'd like to know as I'd buy the wing safety from him.

I am currently in the process of repacing all my Pre 64s with Pre Wars.

$700 is a decent price. The gun will part out for a bit more.

That stock will probably bring $500.

The bolt handle looks like it has been altered and that is also a detractor.

Paul Crosnoe has an undrilled barreled receiver on gunsinternational for $800

ETA: I hit post while trying to scroll.

It would take both guns to make a darn good one.
Then you would have a just about useless 7mm-08 heavy barrel, and altered bolt and altered receiver to sell bringing $500 total if you are lucky, but you would have a darn nice prewar example.

The extra holes and scalloped bolt handle are value killers. It's worth more as parts than as a whole but that's a big hassle.

I'm not sure what you're driving at, but all Model 70's, including the pre-war versions, were built with three way safeties. The pre-war ones simply rotate in the opposite direction. The Model 54's had wing safeties, like Mausers and Springfields.

I should have said the original "wing," which I prefer on non magnums. On magnums I don't mind the era appropriate Tildens.

Looks like this will be either a carry gun or parts gun for someone. I had never taken it out of the stock, but found a couple of unwelcome surprises: The stock is relieved for the scope mount, there are two additional holes under the stock line, and the barrel has a serial number that does not match the action. Looks like I'll send it to GB with full disclosure and just see what it brings. Thanks guys.

Luckily you have the mount, that might help.

You never can tell how badly someone wants one.

For the record pre War and regular pre 64 safeties rotate the same direction from Safe to Fire.

The pre war goes from front to rear and the pre 64 goes from rear to front; both counter-clockwise from Safe to Fire.
